Important Information on Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common procedures carried out in plastic surgeon offices across the country. This procedure is most commonly referred to as a nose job and can repair structural issues in the nose or improve the appearance. If you are unhappy with your nose and wish it could be changed, rhinoplasty surgery may be for you. To find out if you are a good candidate, you will need to visit your plastic surgeon for a consultation.

Rhinoplasty can be carried out under different types of sedation, depending on how much work is being done. If extensive work is needed, where bone and cartilage are effected, you will most likely be fully sedated.

While you are sedated, the surgeon will work to carefully place your incisions. The most common area for incisions is inside the nostrils. This prevents any scarring from being visible. Some surgeons will also create a small incision in the fleshy area between the nostrils. Once you heal, this scarring is rarely noticeable.

In some rhinoplasty procedures, bone and cartilage are removed so the nose is made smaller and more refined. If you are in need of augmentation, bone tissue can be added in. In some cases, the surgeon will use prosthetic pieces to change the shape of the nose.

When your procedure is complete, you will have bandages and drains in place. These protect your nose as it heals. Until the swelling and bruising go down, you will not be able to fully tell what your new nose will look like. This is when you must be patient and trust the surgeon.

Once your bandages are removed, you will be able to see major changes taking place in your nasal structure. It will take a couple of months for you to truly be able to see the full effects. Most surgeons tell their patients they will see the final results after about six months to a year.
